Plenty of Fish (POF) safety guide

Short answer

POF lets members message freely, which makes it easy to meet people and easy for scammers to reach you. Watch for profiles that move you to another app immediately, verify with a video call, and never send money.

POF at a glance

  • Owner: Match Group.
  • Messaging: free messaging is a core part of the service.
  • Public profiles: no public search outside the app.
Check your match before you meet

Private search. Nobody is notified.

Red flags

  • A first message that asks for your number, email or WhatsApp.
  • Profiles with professional photos and very little text.
  • Stories about being overseas, widowed with a child abroad, or in the military.
  • Any request for money, gift cards or crypto.

Can you check if someone is on POF?

There is no legitimate way to search Plenty of Fish for a specific person or to see whether someone is active. Apps do not publish member lists or "last active" data, and services claiming to show it are misleading or break the app's rules. What you can do: check publicly indexed photos and usernames, and ask directly. See is he still on dating apps?

Questions

Why do so many matches ask to move to text?

Moving off the platform puts you out of reach of its scam detection. Stay in the app until you have verified the person.

Know who you are dealing with

Search a name, phone number or email to see public profiles and records.
