Facebook Dating safety guide

Short answer

Facebook Dating runs inside the Facebook app with a separate dating profile. Your Facebook friends are not suggested as matches, and a match cannot see your full Facebook profile unless you share it. Verify matches the same way as on any app: photos, name, number and a video call.

How it works

  • Owner: Meta. Available to adults inside the Facebook app.
  • Separate profile: your dating profile is separate from your main Facebook profile.
  • Friends: Facebook says it does not suggest your Facebook friends as matches (except through features you opt into).
  • Messaging: happens in the Dating tab; you can move to Messenger later.
Check your match before you meet

Private search. Nobody is notified.

Why that matters for safety

A dating profile is tied to a real Facebook account, which raises the bar for fakes, but scammers also buy and steal established Facebook accounts. The FTC found that most romance scam losses start on social media (FTC), so verify every match.

Can you check if someone uses Facebook Dating?

There is no legitimate way to search Facebook Dating for a specific person or to see whether someone is active. Apps do not publish member lists or "last active" data, and services claiming to show it are misleading or break the app's rules. What you can do: check publicly indexed photos and usernames, and ask directly. See is he still on dating apps?

Questions
