How to remove yourself from people-search sites

Short answer

Opt out of each site directly (TrueSearch: the opt-out page), use Google's "Results about you" to remove search results with your phone, address or email, and if you live in California, use the state's DROP tool to send one deletion request to every registered data broker.

Step 1: Opt out site by site

Each people-search site has its own opt-out process. On TrueSearch, use the opt-out page. Search your name on the major sites and follow their opt-out links; keep a list, because records can reappear.

Private search. Nobody is notified.

Step 2: Google results

Google's Results about you tool lets you request removal of search results showing your phone number, home address or email. It removes the result from Google, not the page itself.

Step 3: California DROP

California residents can use DROP (Delete Request and Opt-out Platform), created by the California Delete Act, to send a single deletion request to all data brokers registered in the state.

Step 4: Reduce new exposure

  • Set social profiles to private and remove your phone number from them.
  • Use a Google Voice number for sign-ups and dating.
  • Ask your county about address confidentiality programs if you are a survivor of domestic violence or stalking.

Questions

Can I remove myself from all people-search sites at once?

Not nationally. California's DROP covers data brokers registered in California for California residents; elsewhere you opt out site by site.

Search a name, phone number or email to see public profiles and records.
