Google Voice numbers and dating: red flag or just smart?

Short answer

Using a Google Voice or other app number for dating is a common, sensible privacy step. It becomes a red flag only alongside other signs: no last name, no video call, a story that does not add up, or any talk of money.

How to tell if a number is Google Voice or VoIP

A reverse phone lookup shows the line type. On TrueSearch, line type, carrier and location are free. Google Voice numbers typically come back as VoIP with a wholesale carrier such as Bandwidth or Onvoy (the area code pages show which carriers hold number blocks in each area).

When it is fine

  • They told you it is a dating number.
  • They gave you a real last name and it checks out.
  • They video call without fuss.

When it is a red flag

  • Combined with a refusal to video call or give a last name.
  • They are "overseas" but have a US app number.
  • They hint at being married and only text at odd hours.
  • Any request for money, crypto or gift cards.

Use one yourself

A free app number lets you text matches without giving out your real number, and you can block or drop it at any time. It is one of the simplest safety steps on our first date checklist.

Questions

Can you trace a Google Voice number?

The public can usually see only that it is VoIP and the carrier. Google holds account details and releases them only to law enforcement with legal process.

Do scammers use Google Voice?

Often, along with other free app numbers, because they are free and disposable. That is why the number alone cannot confirm identity.
