How to look someone up ethically, and legally

Short answer

It is reasonable to confirm someone is who they say they are before you meet. It is not OK to track their location, contact their family or employer, access their accounts, or use public data to decide on a job, apartment or loan. Keep your search to identity and safety.

Usually fine

  • Confirming a match's name, face and city before you meet.
  • Checking whether a number that keeps calling you is spam.
  • Checking the public sex offender registry before a date.
  • Reverse-searching photos to spot a fake profile.
Run a safety check

Private search. They are never notified.

Not OK

  • Showing up at someone's home or work uninvited.
  • Contacting their ex, family or employer about them.
  • Logging in to their accounts or installing tracking apps (can be a crime).
  • Repeatedly searching an ex after they have cut contact.
  • Posting their personal information online (doxxing).

The FCRA rule

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, background information used for employment, tenant screening, credit or insurance decisions must come from a consumer reporting agency. TrueSearch is not one, and its results cannot be used for those purposes.

If someone is searching you

You can request removal from TrueSearch on our opt-out page. If someone is stalking or threatening you, contact local police; the National Domestic Violence Hotline can help with safety planning.
