How to find a lost relative or birth parent

Short answer

Start with what family members know, then search free genealogy records (FamilySearch), consider a consumer DNA test, register with mutual-consent reunion registries, and check your state's rules on access to original birth certificates. Reach out gently and let the other person set the pace.

Where to search

  1. Family knowledge: names, places, dates, old letters and photos.
  2. Genealogy records: FamilySearch offers free census, birth, marriage and death indexes.
  3. DNA tests: consumer DNA databases connect you with relatives who have also tested. Read each company's privacy terms before you test.
  4. Reunion registries: mutual-consent registries such as the International Soundex Reunion Registry match people who are both looking.
  5. Adoption records: many states allow adult adoptees to request their original birth certificate or use a state registry; rules vary by state.
  6. Public profiles: once you have a name, a people search and social media can help find a current contact.

Making contact

Consider a letter or an intermediary for the first contact. Some people need time; some decline. Respect their answer.

Questions

Can I get my original birth certificate if I was adopted?

It depends on the state. A growing number of states let adult adoptees request it; check your birth state's vital records office.
