Job offer texts and task scams

Short answer

A text offers a flexible remote job ("online assessor", "product reviewer") and asks you to reply YES. Then you are paid small amounts for simple "tasks" until you are asked to deposit your own money, often crypto, to unlock earnings. Never pay to get paid.

The numbers

The FTC reported that job scam reports tripled from 2020 to 2024 and reported losses rose from $90 million to $501 million (FTC). On April 30, 2026 the FTC warned about recruiter texts that ask you to reply "YES" or "INTERESTED"; replying is the trap (FTC).

How task scams work

  1. You "rate products" or "boost apps" in an online platform.
  2. You earn small amounts ($5 to $20) and may withdraw once.
  3. Then a "combo task" puts your account negative, and you must deposit money (usually crypto) to continue.
  4. Deposits grow, and withdrawals never come (FTC, Aug 2025).

What to do

  1. Ignore unexpected job texts and WhatsApp messages. Real employers do not recruit that way.
  2. Never pay a fee, deposit, or crypto to get a job or your earnings.
  3. Check a recruiter by contacting the company through its official website.
  4. Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM) so your carrier can block the sender, then delete them. Report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Questions

Is a job that pays for liking videos real?

No. Paying people to rate, like or "optimize" products in exchange for deposits is the task scam the FTC describes.

They already paid me. Does that make it real?

No. Small early payouts are designed to build trust before asking for deposits.
