Family emergency and AI voice-clone scams

Short answer

A panicked call from a grandchild or child in trouble (arrested, in an accident, kidnapped) who needs money now. With a few seconds of audio from social media, scammers can clone a voice. Hang up and call your relative on the number you already have, and agree on a family code word today.

Why it is so convincing

In March 2023 the FTC warned that scammers can use a short audio clip and a voice-cloning program to sound just like your family member (FTC). Calls often hand off to a fake lawyer or police officer and demand wire transfers, gift cards, crypto, or cash picked up by a courier.

Carrier, line type and location are free. Private: nobody is notified.

How to protect your family

  1. Agree on a family code word or question only you would know.
  2. If you get an emergency call, hang up and call the person back on their known number, or call another relative.
  3. Never send gift cards, crypto, wires or cash by courier for an emergency you have not verified.
  4. Report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. See the FTC's family emergency scams page.

Questions

Can scammers really clone a voice?

Yes. The FTC has warned that short clips from social media can be enough to imitate someone's voice.

They said not to tell anyone. Should I keep it secret?

No. Secrecy is a scam tactic. Call your family.

Who is behind that number?

Search a name, phone number or email to see public profiles and records.
