The numbers
Bank impersonation was the most-reported text scam of 2022 (FTC, Jun 2023), and fake fraud alerts were still among the top text scams of 2024 (FTC, Apr 2025).
Carrier, line type and location are free. Private: nobody is notified.
How it escalates
- A text or robocall about a suspicious charge.
- You reply or call back and reach a "fraud specialist".
- Caller ID shows your bank's real number. That is spoofing (FCC).
- They say your account is compromised, sometimes "transfer" you to a fake FBI or FTC agent.
- They tell you to move your money to a "safe account", withdraw cash for a courier, or buy gold or crypto. The FTC is blunt: never move your money to "protect it". That is a scam (FTC, Mar 2024).
What to do
- Do not reply to the text or call the number in it.
- Call the number on the back of your card or in your banking app.
- Never share one-time passcodes. Your bank will not ask for them.
- If you sent money, call your bank immediately and ask for a fraud claim and a recall of the transfer.
- Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM) so your carrier can block the sender, then delete them. Report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
