Risks specific to Grindr-style apps
- Setups and robberies: U.S. prosecutors have brought cases against people who used dating apps to lure victims to a location to rob or assault them. Meeting at a private address you have never verified carries real risk.
- Sextortion: explicit photos followed by threats. See what to do; StopNCII.org can help block images from spreading.
- Fake profiles and bots with stolen photos.

Safer habits
- Ask for a recent photo or a short video call before meeting.
- Share your location and the person's profile with a friend you trust.
- Prefer a public first meeting; if you go to a private place, send a friend the address.
- Use the app's privacy features (such as hiding distance) if you are in an unsafe area or not out.
- Never send money, gift cards or crypto.
Privacy and respect
Do not use searches or screenshots to out anyone. Checking that a match is a real person for your own safety is reasonable; exposing someone's sexuality or app use is not, and can put them in danger.
