Fake traffic ticket and DMV texts: how to spot them

Short answer

A text saying you have an unpaid traffic ticket, a court hearing, or a DMV fee, with a link or QR code to pay, is a scam. Courts and DMVs do not collect fines through unexpected texts. Check any notice directly with the court or DMV using contact details you look up yourself.

What the FTC warned about

On April 14, 2026, the FTC warned about texts that look like official traffic hearing notices with a QR code. Scanning it leads to sites that steal personal and financial information, install malware, or take payment for a fine that does not exist (FTC). The FTC had earlier warned (July 2025) about scammers posing as state Departments of Motor Vehicles.

Look up the number that contacted you

Carrier, line type and location are free. Private: nobody is notified.

Signs it is fake

  • It arrived by text with no prior letter.
  • It asks you to scan a QR code or click a link to pay.
  • It threatens license suspension, a warrant or extra fees within hours.
  • It does not include a real case number you can look up on the court's own website.

What to do

  1. Do not scan the code or click the link.
  2. Look up the court or DMV yourself and check your record there. State court websites are listed in our state public records guides.
  3. Forward scam texts to 7726 (SPAM) so your carrier can block the sender, then delete them. Report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Questions

Can a court text me about a ticket?

Some courts send optional reminders, but they do not demand payment through links or QR codes in unexpected texts. Always check through the court's official website.

What if I already paid?

Call your card issuer or bank right away to dispute the charge, and report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Who is behind that number?

Search a name, phone number or email to see public profiles and records.
