Country code lookup

Type a country to get its calling code, type a code to see which country uses it, or paste an international number to find where it is from. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Try:

10-digit numbers without + are read as US/Canada (+1). The prefix shows the country only, not whether the number works.

How to write an international number

Use E.164: a + sign, the country code, then the national number with no spaces, dashes or brackets. Drop the trunk prefix many countries dial at home (often a leading 0). A London number dialed at home as 020 7946 0958 becomes +442079460958.

CRMs, dialers and SMS tools read E.164 the same way everywhere, so storing numbers in that form avoids failed dials and duplicate contacts. Convert a whole list with the free bulk phone number formatter or the CSV phone number normalizer.

Questions

What is a country calling code?

It is the 1 to 3 digit prefix the ITU assigns to a country or group of countries for international calls, written after a + sign. The US and Canada share +1, the UK is +44 and Mexico is +52. In E.164 format a number is the + sign, the country code and the national number, at most 15 digits in total.

How do I find which country a phone number is from?

Paste the full number with its + into the lookup. It matches the country code at the start of the number. For +1 numbers it also reads the area code, because the US, Canada and many Caribbean countries all share +1.

Why does one code show several countries?

Some calling codes are shared. +1 covers the North American Numbering Plan, +7 covers Russia and Kazakhstan, and +44 covers the UK, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. For +1 the area code tells them apart.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The lookup runs in your browser against a built-in list of calling codes. Nothing is sent to TrueSearch or anyone else.

Can it tell if a number is real or still in service?

No. The country code only says where a number is registered. Whether it is in service, and whether it is mobile, landline or VoIP, takes a live carrier lookup, which is what TrueSearch for Business does.

Calling codes: ITU-T E.164 country code assignments and NANPA area code assignments. This guide is general information, not legal advice. TrueSearch for Business checks validity, line type and carrier from licensed telecom data. It does not check the National Do Not Call Registry, state DNC lists or the FCC Reassigned Numbers Database. Not a consumer reporting agency; not for FCRA purposes.
