Phone number verification: verify a phone number is real

Free phone number verification. Enter a number and verify whether it is a working line, whether it is mobile, landline or VoIP, and which carrier it is on, from live carrier data. Nothing is sent to the number.

US and Canadian numbers. Free lookups come out of the same 10 free numbers you get on TrueSearch for Business. An email is required for free lookups.

How to verify a phone number

A number can be formatted correctly and still be dead. Format checks only tell you the digits look right. To verify a phone number, you need to ask live carrier data whether that exact number is assigned and working today.

That carrier check also tells you the line type. A verified mobile number can take calls and texts. A landline cannot receive texts, and VoIP numbers are often forwarding or throwaway lines, so it is worth knowing before you call, text or accept a signup.

When teams verify phone numbers

  • Web leads: verify the number on a form fill before a rep spends time on it.
  • Bought or old lists: verify every number before it goes into the dialer, so agents skip dead lines.
  • SMS campaigns: keep only verified mobile numbers, since texts to landlines never arrive.
  • Signups: flag VoIP numbers at signup with the API.

Questions

What does phone number verification check?

Whether the number is a valid, working line, its line type (mobile, landline, VoIP or toll-free) and the carrier it is on, from live carrier data. It does not return the owner's name or address.

Is it free to verify a phone number?

Yes, up to the 10 free numbers every visitor gets on TrueSearch for Business. You enter your email once. After that, a 7-day free trial covers 1,000 numbers, then plans start at $97/month for 5,000 numbers.

Is this the same as sending a verification code by SMS?

No. A one-time code proves a person controls a phone. This check verifies the number itself without contacting it: nothing is sent and the number is never called or texted.

Does it check the Do Not Call registry?

No. TrueSearch checks validity, line type and carrier only. To check Do Not Call status, use the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov.

Which countries does it support?

This free tool is built for US and Canadian numbers. Type a 10-digit number, or add +1.

Can I verify a whole list of phone numbers?

Yes. Start a 7-day free trial, upload a CSV or Excel file, and every number comes back verified as valid or dead, with line type and carrier, in about 30 seconds per 1,000 numbers. There is also a REST API.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. TrueSearch for Business checks validity, line type and carrier from licensed telecom data. It does not check the National Do Not Call Registry, state DNC lists or the FCC Reassigned Numbers Database. Not a consumer reporting agency; not for FCRA purposes.
