How to reverse image search a dating profile

Short answer

Screenshot the photo, crop it to the face or the full person, and run it through Google Lens and TinEye. Results under the same name are reassuring. Results under a different name, on a model site, or on a scam-warning page mean the profile is fake.

On iPhone

  1. Screenshot the profile photo and crop out the app interface.
  2. Open the Google app, tap the camera (Lens) icon, and choose the screenshot.
  3. Scroll the "Exact matches" and "Visual matches" results.
  4. Repeat at tineye.com in Safari using the upload button.
Then check the name

Private search. They are never notified.

On Android

  1. Screenshot and crop the photo.
  2. Open Google Photos, select the screenshot and tap Lens.
  3. Check exact matches first, then visual matches.

On a computer

Go to images.google.com, click the camera icon and upload or drag in the image. Try TinEye and Bing Visual Search too; each indexes different sites, so a photo missed by one is often found by another.

Reading the results

  • No results: common for normal people, whose photos are on private accounts. Not a red flag by itself.
  • Same name, older accounts: reassuring.
  • Different name: the photos are stolen. Stop.
  • Model, influencer or stock-photo sites: stolen.
  • "Scammer photo" sites or forums: others have already been targeted with these photos.
Tip: scammers flip or crop photos to beat reverse search. Try a second photo, and try cropping tightly to the face.

Questions

Can I reverse image search a Tinder or Hinge photo?

Yes. Take a screenshot, crop it, and upload it to Google Lens or TinEye. The other person is not notified.

What if a reverse image search finds nothing?

That is normal for private people. Move on to a name search and a video call.

Search a name or phone number to see public profiles and photos before you meet.
